In 1879, Alfred Perret established a Parisian workshop dedicated to the creation of finely crafted bamboo furniture, catering to an affluent clientele captivated by the exoticism of the Far East. At a time when Japonisme and Chinoiserie were sweeping through Europe, Perret — later joined by Ernest Vibert — recognised a growing desire for interiors that reflected both sophistication and escapism.
By the early 1890s, the firm had evolved into the renowned Maison des Bambous, producing entire suites of furniture inspired by Japanese and Chinese design. Their work was not merely decorative; it was innovative. Bamboo, traditionally seen as a simple material, was elevated through careful construction, elegant proportions and a distinctive architectural quality that made each piece both sculptural and functional.
This chair is a fine example of that vision. The form is bold yet balanced, with strong linear construction softened by the natural warmth of the bamboo.
